PSLF Requirements & Eligibility

All four requirements must be met to qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. We'll help you understand and meet each one.

1

Qualifying Employment

You must work full-time for a qualifying public service organization while making your 120 payments.

Qualifying Employers:

  • Federal, state, local, or tribal government organizations
  • 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organizations
  • Other non-profits providing qualifying public services
  • AmeriCorps and Peace Corps volunteers

Full-time requirement: At least 30 hours per week or what your employer considers full-time, whichever is greater.

2

Eligible Loan Types

Only federal Direct Loans are eligible for PSLF. Other loan types may need to be consolidated first.

Qualifying Loans:

  • Direct Subsidized Loans
  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans
  • Direct PLUS Loans
  • Direct Consolidation Loans

Have FFEL or Perkins loans? You can consolidate them into a Direct Consolidation Loan to make them eligible for PSLF.

3

Qualifying Repayment Plan

You must be enrolled in a qualifying repayment plan to make eligible payments toward PSLF.

Qualifying Plans:

  • Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans - Recommended
  • Income-Based Repayment (IBR)
  • Pay As You Earn (PAYE)
  • Revised Pay As You Earn (REPAYE)
  • Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR)
  • 10-Year Standard Repayment Plan

Pro tip: IDR plans often result in lower monthly payments, maximizing your potential forgiveness amount.

4

120 Qualifying Payments

You must make 120 qualifying monthly payments (10 years) while meeting all other requirements.

Payment Requirements:

  • Made on time (within 15 days of due date)
  • For the full amount due
  • Made while employed full-time by a qualifying employer
  • Made under a qualifying repayment plan
  • Cannot be consecutive - can be spread over multiple employers

Track your progress: Submit Employment Certification Forms annually to ensure you're on track for forgiveness.
